What Is a Chemical Peel Treatment

As time passes, our skin suffers from various factors, such as environmental pollution, sun damage, smoking or alcohol consumption. All these factors, along with the intense stress of modern life, lead to a delay in skin regeneration and cell renewal. The “old” cells stay stuck on the surface of the skin and prevent the new ones from emerging. Thus, our skin acquires a dull appearance, loses its elasticity and several open or closed pores appear. The solution to these problems is the chemical peeling treatment.

Chemical peel is a skin resurfacing procedure in which a chemical solution is applied to the skin to remove the top layers.

Its purpose is to smooth out wrinkles and scars, treat signs of aging, and offer skin rejuvenation. It can be done alone or combined with other cosmetic procedures. And it can be done at different depths, from light to deep. Deeper chemical peels can offer more dramatic results but also take longer to recover.

When Is Chemical Peeling Applied?

Chemical peels are used to treat certain skin conditions, including the following:

  • Scarring due to acne
  • Skin ageing
  • Crow’s feet
  • Scars
  • Sun-damaged skin
  • Skin sagging
  • Fine lines and wrinkles

Areas of Application

Chemical Peelings are mainly applied in the following areas:

  • Face
  • Neck
  • Décolleté

The Three Types of Chemical Peeling

Superficial chemical peel

Superficial chemical peels act mainly on the skin surface and remove the outer layer of the skin. This type of peel is the most common and has a good exfoliating action. It is used to treat fine wrinkles, dry areas, and acne. In general, surface peels are suggested to be performed once a month.

Medium chemical peel

In the medium peel, skin cells are removed from the epidermis, reaching the upper part of the middle layer of the skin (dermis). It is mainly used to treat fine wrinkles, surface imperfections, as well as skin pigmentation problems. The treatment is also used to improve age spots and freckles.

Deep chemical peel

These peelings reach deep into the middle layer of the skin, the reticular dermis. They are used to treat intense wrinkles on the face, as well as blemishes and acne scars. Because deeper peels are quite strong, it is recommended to be performed only once a year, as they require longer healing. Our clients usually see a dramatic improvement in skin appearance.

The Chemical Peeling Procedure We Follow at Serenity Esthetics, USA

1st step

Thorough cleaning of the treatment area where the chemical peel will be applied, protecting the eyes and hair.

2nd step

The esthetician applies the solution with a brush or cotton swab if it is a liquid solution or with a special spatula if it is a gel. The exfoliating agent is first applied to the areas where the skin is thicker, such as the cheeks, forehead, and chin, and then to the other areas of the face with uniform movements in the same direction.

3rd step

Most peels should remain on the skin for one to two minutes. We watch your face closely. At this stage, you may feel a slight burning or tingling sensation, which is normal.

4th step

Most peels require a neutralizing agent to stop the peeling. We apply this agent to your face in order to stop the burning process.

After any chemical peel, your face will be irritated or slightly swollen, and you may also see redness and peeling. Follow your esthetician’s guidelines for sun protection, cleansing, and moisturizing, and avoid rubbing or scratching the treated area.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a chemical peel painful?

Most clients experience a mild tingling, warmth, or slight stinging during the treatment, which lasts only a few minutes. A neutralizing agent is applied afterward to stop the peeling and soothe the skin. Deep peels may cause more intense sensations, but our estheticians ensure your comfort throughout the procedure.

Who is a good candidate for a chemical peel?

Most people looking to improve skin tone, texture, and signs of aging can benefit from a chemical peel. However, those with very sensitive skin, active infections, or certain medical conditions should consult with our estheticians to determine the best treatment.

What should I do after a chemical peel?

After Treatment make sure your skin remains moisturized and avoid harsh skincare products, makeup, and sun exposure for a few days. Always use sunscreen (SPF 30+) to protect your new skin and avoid touching, peeling, or scratching the treated area. For best results, follow your esthetician’s post-care instructions.

What will my face look like 3 to 6 days after a chemical peel?

In the first few days, you may notice some dryness, irritation, and mild swelling. Two to Three days, your skin may look flaky or peeled, and discolorations or imperfections may temporarily be more noticeable. Three to six days,  you may notice your skin looks slightly darker than usual.
